The anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica (originally titled Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica) is a Japanese dark fantasy series created by Studio Shaft and released in 2011.

The story follows Madoka Kaname, a schoolgirl who encounters a mysterious creature named Kyubey. It offers her a contract: to become a magical girl in exchange for granting any wish she desires. However, Madoka soon discovers that the world of magic and battles against witches hides grim secrets, and the cost of power is far greater than it initially seems. Together with other magical girls, Madoka strives to uncover the truth and make a choice that could change her destiny.

The anime gained widespread acclaim for its original take on the magical girl genre, intense narrative, and profound philosophical themes. In 2012, two compilation films were released, followed by a sequel titled Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion in 2013. The premiere of a new film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht: Rising, was initially planned for 2024 but was postponed to winter 2025 due to production challenges.
